England 34-man Squad

The England 34 man squad for the 6 nations has been released. Eddie Jones has seen it fit to add 3 uncapped players to the squad. Back Row Mike Williams will get his chance after missing out the Autumn tests with a broken arm. Bath prop Nathan Catt will also get a call-up into the squad, probably coming in due to Mako’s injury which Saracens say will rule him out until the end of February at best. Alex Lozowski, the former Wasp and now Saracens fly-half, comes into the squad after some fine displays for Saracens. The 23-year-old will surely be part of England’s future plans with the amount of talent that he possess.

Coming back into the squad there is James Haskell after only 30ish seconds of rugby before knocking himself out. It will be interesting how he performs as although he will be very fit, he might not be as match sharp. Joe Marler’s injury is better than initial reports and this will give him a chance to lay down his claim to the number 1 shirt in Mako’s absence. George Kruis is fit, after a minor cheekbone injury, and will compete for the second-row position against an in-form Launchbury.

A controversial inclusion is Marland Yarde. Eddie could have picked a third scrum-half (Dan Robson would have been my choice) or another in-form winger such as Roko or Christain Wade. Questions are raised about both of these winger’s defences: Roko is often out of position and Wade (who has improved his defence over the years) struggles under a high ball. Yarde brings safety in these two areas. Furthermore, it seems that Eddie like to employee a system of having one fast winger and one battering ram.

Overall, the squad looks promising. A great mix of young talents and leaders.
